The first day of our road trip begins!

I ended up waking up waaaaay earlier than I needed because I was so excited! But it was good because it gave me time to run to the gas station to grab some ice for the coolers before we left.

After packing up the car we headed off full of excitement for our adventure!

Our first stop was to switch off drivers and grab some coffee for Jenna in Gallup. We tried to find a local coffee shop, but they were all closed on Sunday! We ended up stopping at Starbucks and I was fascinated by this mural/message on the wall. →

It makes me want to learn Navajo! So cool.

Our next stop was an at the AZ sign—though we realized after that we stopped at the wrong one! It still made for a good pic though!

Our next major stop was the Petrified Forest National Park.

We had both driven past it many times on previous road trips, but had never stopped, so we were stoked to get to do so this time!

Plus, I’m a nerd for geology, and this place was PACKED with it!

We both had it in our heads that it would be a simple pull-over-take-a-picture-leave kind of situation—

and boy were we wrong!

The park was MUCH bigger than we realized and there was soooooo much to see!

I guess we should have expected that from a National Park.

Jenna and I both love information, so we went to check out the visitors center first—with a pit stop into the gift shop where I found a really pretty necklace with a piece of petrified wood in it—and then we set off into the park!

Here’s a very awkward picture of us in front of the sign lol

As I said before, there are many things to see in this park—from petrified wood, to geologic wonders of desert landscapes, to ruins of prehistoric peoples. We started at the top and worked our way down, seeing the Painted Desert first and ending with the petrified wood.

For a geology nerd like myself, this place was honestly incredible.

Here’s a collage!

It was insane how well preserved the trees were. I could see bark and knots. Jenna and I knocked on several just to prove to our eyes that they were real!

Look how cool it is! You can see the entire tree trunk!
